The Brillion School District has filed a request to amend the contract with its School Resource Officer.
Brillion Alderperson Kurtis Stephany explained that the change would have SRO Captain TJ Bastian time in the schools reduced from 24 hours per week to 16 through the remainder of the school year.
While he understood the reason for the request, as the District has had to make several cutbacks, Alderman Stephany noted, “When it comes to the safety of our students and staff, I believe that is an investment you cannot put a price on… Overall, the SRO position—and specifically Captain Bastian—serves as both a safety asset and a trusted resource for our students, staff, families, and the community.”
He also noted that it is not his decision to make, but he hopes his perspective, having served as a School Resource Officer in the New Holstein School District from 2011 to 2020, will sway decision-makers to keep the current contract intact.
