The Oshkosh Police Department is warning of another scam that has been circulating around the area.
It is referred to as the “wrong number” text scam, and it works much as you might expect.
A scammer sends a message to your phone saying something along the lines of “This is so-and-so. I hope I didn’t text the wrong number!”
If you respond, they will eventually begin talking about cryptocurrency, investing, or an “easy” way to make money.
While it is very Wisconsin to respond and try to get the person on the right track, the best response is no response.
Simply block and delete the message.
The Oshkosh Police Department noted, “A conversation that starts by accident can end with a major financial loss.”
