The Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office lost one of its former K9s.
Back on September 5th, deputies said goodbye to retired K9 Leon, who served faithfully alongside his handler, Deputy Chris Hemauer, for seven years between September 2016 and October 2023.
Leon retired at 10 and a half years old, enjoying three well‑earned years at home surrounded by comfort, family, and the people who loved him most.
The sheriff’s office says that during his career, Leon distinguished himself as an exceptional working dog, with his “accomplishments reflecting the heart, drive, and loyalty he carried into every track, search, and deployment.”
He earned awards for being the Top Dog at the Karl Zeitler Memorial Hunt K9 Competition in 2022 and the WLECHA Meritorious Track Award in 2023.
Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Deputies say retired and current K9 handlers gathered at Leon’s home to give him the honor every working dog deserves—his final ride.
Leon was escorted to Memorial Drive Veterinary Clinic, where law enforcement officers stood to pay their respects as he completed his last journey.
The sheriff’s office finished by thanking Leon for his service, adding “Rest easy, Leon. We have the watch from here.”
