An athlete is dead after suffering a medical emergency during the IRONMAN 70.3 Wisconsin competition in Madison.
Officials said the incident happened during the swimming portion of the event Saturday morning.
UW Lake Rescue personnel brought the athlete to shore and began life-saving measures before emergency crews took over.
The athlete was transported to a hospital, where they later died.
IRONMAN USA confirmed the death and is not releasing further information out of respect for the family’s privacy.
