A Valders woman’s cellphone helped her get help after her vehicle was hit by a train.
Manitowoc County Sheriff Dan Hartwig tells SeehaferNews.com that the Joint Dispatch Center received an automated iPhone crash detection 911 call at 3:30 Wednesday afternoon.
Deputies were then dispatched to the area of Lenz Road south of Highway 151, where they found a 76-year-old woman trapped in her vehicle.
The woman was said to have been traveling south on Lenz Road when she failed to yield the right of way for an oncoming Canadian National train.
She was removed from the vehicle thanks to help from the Valders Fire & Ambulance, St. Nazianz Fire, and Branch Fire Departments, and taken via ThedaStar to a hospital for treatment.
Her current status is unknown at this time. Sheriff Hartwig is reminding motorists to “slow down, stay alert, and always yield to trains when approaching and crossing railroad tracks.”
He also noted, “A train can take significantly longer to stop than a vehicle, making it critical for drivers to obey warning signals and never attempt to beat a train through a crossing.”
The Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office was also assisted by the St. Nazianz Police Department, Manitowoc County Joint Dispatch Center, Town of Liberty, Wisconsin State Patrol, and Hi-Way 42 Garage.
