Manitowoc residents have been stepping up to get their lead service laterals replaced.
Manitowoc Public Utilities Water and Wastewater Manager Rob Michaelson says over 700 people have signed up.
Michaelson and MPU are continuing to emphasize the importance of getting the lead out since Manitowoc residents are eligible to replace their lead service line (LSL) at 50% of the actual cost.
Michaelson noted on the WCUB Breakfast Club last week that anyone interested in having their LSL replaced can contact MPU.
He also reminds residents that the process isn’t invasive to your yard.
All the contractor needs is access to the homeowner’s basement.
“They do a trenchless method,” Michaelson explained. “They snake a cable right through the lead service line. On the back side, they have what we call a Chinese finger trap essentially. It pulls the new water service material through. They make their connections in the road, at the grass terrace, and connect to your internal plumbing. They backfill all the holes, the city does the street restoration, and they’re out of your hair. Most projects we see (take) four to five hours.”
