With ground now broken on the new Maritime Lofts in downtown Manitowoc, what will the process of building look like?
Ted Matkom, with the developer Gorman and Company, tells Seehafernews.com that they are excited because they can build on a full city block, with half of it going toward apartments and the other half for a park area.
As was said during his speech, Matkom explains how Gorman and Company is excited to bring the Washington Street of the Mirro Property back to the community.
He added, “And actually put is on the tax rolls and make it another value add to Manitowoc.”
One neat thing Matkom says Gorman and Company will do is use the foundation of the former Mirro Aluminum factory to support the new apartments by adding a concrete slab on top of it.
“So right now we are excavating all these foundations,” he explained. “And people should come out, it’s actually fascinating to see what is underneath the soil because it’s the old Mirro Foundation from 1897.”
The plan is to have the concrete foundation down by this winter.
But residents might see beams being installed as the apartment complex is built up.
Spring is when major construction will begin before Gorman and Company completes a certificate of occupancy by December 2027.
“It’s kind of out deadline,” he noted. “And then we start moving people in in January which is what that date is, January 2028.”
Matkom concludes by saying that their project will have a cascading effect on downtown Manitowoc and is very excited to get started.
City, state, and federal leaders officially broke ground yesterday.
The Maritime Lofts will feature 59 apartments, including 21 one-bedroom, 20 two-bedroom, and 18 three-bedroom apartments, and will cost about $20 million to complete.
