The City of Sheboygan is offering a clarification to residents regarding its upcoming speaker series on data centers.
The City explains that this speaker series was established after the Common Council adopted a 12-month data center moratorium earlier this year.
They also noted that the purpose of the series is to “inform the development of thoughtful zoning code updates that protect the City. It is not designed to either support or oppose any specific data center project.”
This clarification was deemed necessary by the City after they received significant public backlash from a large number of residents, who noted they were strongly opposed to a data center coming to Sheboygan.
In the City’s statement, City Administrator Casey Bradley said this is being done to ensure transparency, community involvement, and access to reliable information and added, “While the City is prohibited from banning a lawful business type, it can regulate certain aspects through zoning, which is why expert guidance is essential.”
The speaker series is slated to begin on September 9th, featuring Alliant Energy Wisconsin’s President Becky Valcq, who previously worked in Data Center Services for the company.
