We should all look so good as Barbie does at 67! No Senior Slump for her!
Young and old still celebrate—and play with and collect—America’s favorite doll. That’s why Manitowoc Public Library is holding an All-Ages Barbie Party on Tuesday, September 1, at 6 PM, in the Balkansky Community Room.
From her earliest days—Barbie was first marketed in 1959 by Mattel—to now, the doll has both remained evergreen but has changed with the times. Barbie began as the brainchild of Mattel’s Ruth Handler, who felt her daughter (also named Barbie!) had only two options of play—paper dolls or baby dolls. She wanted to create a doll that represented an adult—one that children could play with to project their dreams and imaginations.
Barbie has held hundreds of jobs (paleontologist, doctor, fashion model, astronaut, teacher, even President of the United States to name but a few!), had many pets (dogs, cats, horses!) and has entertained dozens of friends. Mostly notably, of course, those who grew up with Barbie dolls may recognize Ken, Midge and Skipper, but dozens of others have joined her community over the past six decades.

The Barbie landscape has grown and diversified immensely, due to changes in childhood play throughout generations. To better represent all girls out there, the doll’s hair has had all colors and lengths. She has represented many ethnicities. Some Barbies now sport tattoos and piercings. Some are in wheelchairs and wear hearing aids. Others represent Down syndrome.
While today’s little girls still love to play with dolls, adults are just as enthusiastic about collecting vintage Barbies. Some of the earliest dolls have sold for thousands of dollars. The best finds are those from the early-1960s with original packaging.
But whether you play with your dolls or collect them, the Think Pink Party will share our multigenerational love of Mattel’s original doll. The Think Pink Barbie Party will entertain both kids and adults alike. Everyone is invited to bring their favorite dolls and accessories for a show-and-tell event. Adults can bring their vintage dolls to get an idea of their collectible value. And we’ll share a craft, treats, and even have fun raffle prizes. Wear pink, think pink, and get your best Barbie story ready!
