A new housing project in Two Rivers is getting over $2 million in assistance from the state.
The Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority (WHEDA) says two loan programs will help with the building of the West River Lofts.
Over $1.6 million is coming from the Vacancy-to-Vitality loan program, which converts vacant commercial buildings into workforce or senior housing.
Funds from the loan program also go towards apartments being built in Sheboygan on Reed Avenue.
The Infrastructure Access program will also provide over $682,000 in loan assistance and help a developer cover the cost of installing, replacing, upgrading, or improving public infrastructure for workforce housing.
Since 2019, more than 35,000 housing units have been built to address Wisconsin’s workforce.
Governor Tony Evers says he’s proud of the state’s efforts, saying, “Expanding access to safe, stable, and affordable housing is a key part of our work to support kids and families, strengthen our communities, and grow our state’s workforce.”
Funding for the projects came from bipartisan legislation that modified the programs to make them more effective at expanding affordable housing options in the state.
