The Manitowoc Police Department will again participate in a very successful program preventing people from drinking and driving.
This year’s NHTSA Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over enforcement campaign runs from next Wednesday (August 19th) to September 7th.
Manitowoc Police Lieutenant Bruce Tuma says the goal is not just to arrest impaired drivers but to enhance public safety and prevent needless tragedies by discouraging people from making a dangerous and irresponsible decision to get behind the wheel.
Between July 2025 and 2026, there were 116 crashes in Manitowoc County reported with alcohol being a factor.
One person was killed while 65 others were injured because of the impaired crashes.
The statistics come through a partnership with the UW-Madison Traffic Information Center and UW TOPS Lab.
Tuma finished by saying that impaired driving is entirely preventable by choosing to go with a sober designated driver or get a safe ride home.
Anyone who sees an impaired driver should also not be afraid to call 911.
