The City of Two Rivers is looking to extend a contract with its long-time non-profit wholesale power provider.
WPPI Energy helps provide wholesale electricity to the city, and the city council is looking to extend its agreement by an extra 18 years.
The current agreement would end in 2055, but with the extension, it would continue until 2073.
The decision would not stop electricity but could cause issues in the future for the Cool City.
City Staff says extending the contract allows WPPI to borrow money over longer periods, lowering financing costs and providing greater certainty when planning major investments.
If the city decides not to extend its contract, it will give up its guaranteed right to continue to purchase power from WPPI after 2055, and the power supplier will plan to take Two Rivers out of their system.
Two Rivers staff are recommending approval of the contract extension to help keep financing costs low, support continued access to regional generation and transmission resources, and provide long-term planning for the city’s electric utility.
The city says approving the contract itself will not affect electric rates. The city council has not voted on the extension yet but could at a future meeting.
