A Manitowoc man charged in a hit-and-run last year has been convicted.
Court records show that 36-year-old Steven Behnke was found guilty due to a no-contest plea on charges including hit-and-run causing great bodily harm, knowingly operating a vehicle with a revoked license, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and resisting or obstructing an officer.
Charges of carrying a concealed weapon and failure to install an ignition interlock device were dismissed but read into the record.
Manitowoc County Assistant District Attorney Jill Vendetti recommended the maximum sentence Behnke can receive for the crime.
He will be sentenced on October 1st. Manitowoc Police were called to the intersection of South 10th and Washington Street in May last year after a vehicle struck a motorcyclist.
The motorcyclist ended up going to the hospital due to the injuries sustained.
A piece of Behnke’s vehicle was found at the scene with a VIN on it.
Officers called the 36-year-old, who claimed he was in Sheboygan.
But it was later learned that his vehicle was taken to a local collision repair shop.
Video surveillance also shows Behnke dropping the vehicle off before walking away.
