An Appleton resident is safe thanks in part to working smoke detectors.
The Appleton Fire Department was dispatched to a home in the 2500 block of South Kernan Avenue at around 3:30 Sunday morning on a report of a house fire.
Neighbors called in the fire after smelling the smoke and seeing the flames.
Fire crews arrived on the scene and got the blaze under control within 20 minutes of arrival.
The homeowner was inside when the fire began and was woken up by the sound of their smoke alarm.
They were able to escape unharmed prior to firefighters arriving at the scene.
No injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but it was said to have caused around $225,000 in damage.
