A data center moratorium is one step closer to being passed in Sheboygan.
At this week’s City Plan Commission meeting, the group unanimously approved the year-long moratorium after it was previously referred back to the Commission by the Council.
The language of the moratorium states, “A temporary zoning moratorium is hereby declared with respect to the issuance of permits and approvals for data centers as a principal and primary use, when such data centers contain at least 10,000 square feet of floor area within a single building or collection of buildings on a single parcel.”
The City states that this move is intended to provide staff with adequate time to create reasonable regulations to “protect the health, safety, and general welfare of the City.”
These efforts will be spearheaded by the City Attorney’s Office as well as the Sheboygan Department of Planning and Development.
With the Plan Commission’s unanimous approval, the data center moratorium will now go before Sheboygan’s Common Council for final approval in the future.
