A relatively new tradition in Sheboygan set for early next month has been cancelled.
The City of Sheboygan has announced the cancellation of the Midwest Challenge Powerboat Races, which were set to take place on August 8th and 9th in the waters of Lake Michigan.
The City continues to say that this tough decision was made by the International Hot Rod Association (IHRA), the event’s organizing body, due to “unforeseen staffing and operational issues.”
Meanwhile, Mayor Ryan Sorenson added, “This is an incredibly disappointing outcome for our community, local businesses, and the many fans who look forward to this event each year. Unfortunately, IHRA could not provide the race operations staffing needed to safely run the boat races, and that shortfall has led to their cancellation.”
Despite the cancellation, the City and its partners are still at work to adjust and preserve the weekend’s many land-based festivities, including the Friday Block Party and the King Park Bites and Brews events.
Additional information on the cancellation, as well as future updates regarding the events planned for the weekend, can be found on the City of Sheboygan Facebook page.
