The City of Manitowoc is changing how it uses its emergency warning sirens.
Mayor Justin Nickels tells SeehaferNews.com that the Public Safety Committee unanimously approved following the siren activation standards for Manitowoc County.
That means emergency sirens in the Clipper City will only go off when there is a tornado warning in the area, and not for severe thunderstorm warnings and high wind alerts.
Also, beginning next month, Nickels says siren tests will only be held on the first Wednesday of each month, not every Saturday as previously.
That is supposed to reduce unnecessary wear, confusion, and “white noise.”
Manitowoc officials are working with Manitowoc County Emergency Management to inform the public about changes to the siren system.
That will begin next month. Nickels also reminds residents that the sirens are meant for people outside to seek shelter, not for people already inside.
WOMT Radio, NOAA Weather Radios, smartphone apps, TVs, and other warning tools are also encouraged.
