Wisconsin’s governor is slamming the Trump Administration for denying an application for Public Assistance and Hazard Mitigation for four counties, including Manitowoc.
The request came after severe storms and flooding in April, which caused extensive damage to public infrastructure.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency says the letter sent by Governor Tony Evers for Hazard Mitigation funding is “not of the severity and magnitude to warrant their designation for Public Assistance.”
Gov. Evers says damage assessments were done by FEMA, Wisconsin Emergency Management, and local officials to determine more than $20 million in eligible disaster costs.
Gov. Evers says Trump is “basically telling Wisconsinites that millions of dollars in damages our communities have suffered due to tornadoes, storms, and flooding isn’t bad enough or high enough—it’s a slap in the face.”
Wisconsin has 30 days from the date of denial to appeal the decision. A state of emergency was declared after the April Severe Weather to begin the process of obtaining federal aid.
Manitowoc County is joined by Bayfield, Marathon, and Racine Counties, which will not get aid for storm damage.
