A new summer trend is going viral, and a local health organization is warning of the risks involved.
“Tanmaxxing,” which encourages people to attain the darkest tan possible through prolonged, unprotected sun exposure and frequent tanning bed use.
Emplify Health by Bellin is reminding everyone that the health consequences of this trend are well-documented and severe.
The World Health Organization classifies ultraviolet radiation and indoor tanning devices as Group 1 carcinogens, placing them in the same category as tobacco and asbestos.
Tanning beds deliver 10 to 15 times more UVA radiation than outdoor sunlight, and individuals who use them before the age of 35 face a 75 percent increased risk of developing melanoma — the deadliest form of skin cancer.
In the United States alone, an estimated 112,000 new melanoma cases are projected this year.
