Some visitors to Neshotah Beach in Two Rivers will have to pay to park there in the future.
Earlier this year, the City of Two Rivers approved a 10-day paid parking pilot program for parking lots 2 and 3 at the beach.
That means visitors will be required to pay to park on select high-demand summer days, although the city did not directly mention those days.
Questions have been raised about the program, including why the city started it. Staff says while tourism benefits the community, there have been increased maintenance costs for the beach, parking lots, restrooms, public safety, and more.
The city says having people pay for parking “shifts the costs from Two Rivers property taxpayers to the visitors who enjoy the beach.
Simply put, our residents should not be expected to fund the entire cost of operating one of the region’s most popular public destinations.”
The daily parking fee for lots 2 and 3 at Neshotah Beach will be $10 a vehicle.
Two Rivers staff also explained why Two Rivers residents would have to pay.
There is a law that prevents the Cool City from allowing residents to park for free while charging everyone else. But all money collected from paid parking will go back into Neshotah Beach to offset operating and maintenance costs.
