Staffing shortages in the Milwaukee Police Department are behind the spread-out coverage over the Fourth of July weekend.
The president of the Milwaukee Police Association told TMJ-4 News the department is short about 170 officers and 30 detectives, making it difficult to cover the entire city during holiday events.
The shortage came into play during a busy Independence Day that includes fights at Summerfest, an officer-involved shooting and a fireworks incident that knocked an officer down.
The MPA hopes to see a stronger effort to get more recruits into classes to staff the department.
