The ADRC is providing a way for senior citizens to get the nutrition they deserve.
Emily Siemers is a nutritionist for the ADRC in Manitowoc and oversees several programs at the ADRC, including the Seniors Farmers Market Vouchers Program.
This program was created to help seniors get the nutrition that they need.
The ADRC is given vouchers for Wisconsin farmers’ markets, and then they give these vouchers to those who need them.
This system not only benefits seniors but also attracts more customers to farmers’ markets.
She explained, “So, providing opportunities to discover new, delicious fruits and vegetables while also supporting the local food system.”
There are two criteria that must be met for anyone seeking vouchers.
First, the individual has to be over 60 years old. Second, there are income guidelines.
For a one-person household, the individual must earn less than $29,526 per year to be eligible for the vouchers.
For a two-person household, the pair must earn less than $40,034 a year.
If you meet those guidelines, you can get a voucher.
“Verifying you’re age eligible and income eligible, and you would receive 5 $5 vouchers to use at the local farmers market,” She described.
The outreach dates for the vouchers are the first two weeks of June, but anyone who still wants a voucher can stop by 1701 Michigan Avenue in Manitowoc to pick up any remaining vouchers.
Siemers knows that this program benefits so many people in our community, and she is honored to be a part of the cause.
“This is a wonderful program for not only having an affordable way to get fresh foods but also again supporting local farmers because this is all about only using them in the state of Wisconsin, these vouchers,” she stated. “So for Wisconsin farmers, all around just a really great program.”
