The State of Wisconsin is reminding Gold Star Families that the special license plate will not cost them.
2025 Wisconsin Act 50 was signed into law last December by Governor Tony Evers, permanently waiving the license plate fee and allowing families to personalize their Gold Star specialty license plate at no cost.
Evers calls the law a “small but meaningful way for the state to honor the bravery and sacrifice of our military heroes and to recognize their families who miss them, love them, and mourn them every day.”
State officials are also recognizing the law ahead of the July 4th holiday.
There are 483 active Gold Star license plates on Wisconsin roads, and only 296 of them are personalized.
The license plates are only available to the immediate family of a service member killed in the line of duty.
