Manitowoc County’s executive is giving an update on the Manitowoc County Courthouse improvements.
On WOMT’s Be My Guest program last week, Tyler Martell said that work has been completed on the courthouses’ windows and HVAC upgrades.
The next step is to get restoration work done on the courthouse dome.
The county did have a proposal in the 2026 county budget to borrow money, but that was taken out by the county’s Finance Committee.
Martell says he’s been asked why the dome should be restored.
“That building is on the historic registry,” he explained. “And so we looked at (what if) we took the dome off, or if we don’t restore the dome, but there is a lot of rules that come with historic preservation. Unfortunately, not a lot of funding.”
Martell said that he also takes comfort knowing the building itself is sound. It still will cost around $25 to $30 million to completely overhaul the dome.
Martell would also like to have county finances “in order” before anything would move forward.
