The City of Manitowoc is continuing testing at the former Newton Gravel Pit.
The common council last week approved a supplemental task order with AECOM Technical Services for well sampling and groundwater treatment.
The company will set up around 70 portable wells with up to 75 water samples.
The city and AECOM will then report the sampling results to the Wisconsin DNR and well owners.
Both projects are expected to cost a little more than $70,000.
The last update provided by the city in 2024 says they’ve been testing for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and emerging contaminants.
Areas where water main sampling has been done include Hecker Road from the Gravel Pit South to Silver Creek Road, Silver Creek Road from County Road CR to S. 26th Street, and other streets on the city’s south side.
The Newton Gravel Pit was used as a dumping area for industrial chemicals, which resulted in contaminants being released into the soil and groundwater.
