
Day one of the WIAA Girls Soccer State Tournament had a shutout victory, and a late comeback attempt was thwarted.
In the opening match at Uihlein Soccer Park in Milwaukee, top-seeded Divine Savior Holy Angels proves why they earned that spot by taking down #4 Kimberly 3-0 in Division 1 semifinal action.
Sarah Mcelherne got the scoring started in the 20th minute with an assist from Brailey Baxter, and Reese Roethe would add another in the 30th minute, thanks to a helper from Avery Roethe.
Baxter would get another assist in the 49th minute, when she found Izzy Burris, who extended the lead to 3.
The other D-1 semifinal saw #3 Muskego hold off a late push from #2 Oregon to earn a 2-1 win.
The Warriors’ Sadie Mittelstaedt found the back of the net in the 26th minute with an assist from Bree Scafe, and again 3 minutes later, thanks to a helper from Kelsey Morgan.
Muskego would take that lead all the way to the 69th minute, when Kylie Steel would get the Panthers on the board on a penalty kick.
Oregon would get two more shots off before time ran out, but one missed wide right, and the other was saved by Savannah Mittelstaedt.
Division 4 semifinals will begin the action today, as #1 Xavier is set to battle #4 Ozaukee/Random Lake at 11:00 a.m.
The Hawks have been an offensive powerhouse this postseason, outscoring their opponents 20-2.
The Rams are no slouch themselves, outscoring their opponents 23-1.
They will be followed by #2 The Prairie School, facing off against #3 Aquinas, each of whom advanced to state thanks to 2-0 wins in the Sectional Championship.
In the Division 3 semis, top-seeded McFarland is set to battle #4 Rice Lake, which has only allowed 1 goal all postseason.
However, the Spartans, who enter the game at 16-0-4, have been perfect all playoffs, outscoring their opponents 21-0.
Then, at 7:00 p.m., the unbeaten 2-seeded Kiel Raiders will face off against #3 New Berlin Eisenhower.
The Raiders haven’t allowed a goal in 10 games, and have 19 shutouts in their 24 games played.
