All but one of the championship matchups are now set in the WIAA State Baseball Tournament.
In Division 2 semifinals yesterday at Neuroscience Group Field in Grand Chute, top-seeded Pewaukee edged out Somerset 2-1, with both pitchers going the distance, and taking control of the game.
Pewaukee’s Blayke Duvall and Somerset’s Mason Schmidt each allowed 4 hits and struck out a total of 17 batters, but an error in the 4th allowed the eventual game-winning Pirates run.
In the other D-2 matchup, Kenosha St. Joseph Catholic bested Waupun 5-3, thanks in part to a 2 RBI performance by Dominic Santarelli.
The Warriors’ Sutton Nelson was tagged with the loss, despite sitting down nine batters. In Division 1, only one of the matchups went on as scheduled, which saw Kaukauna take care of Nicolet 7-1.
The #7-seeded Knights were able to keep pace with the Galloping Ghosts through 3 innings, only trailing 2-1 before a four-run explosion put the game out of reach, and earned Kaukauna their first state baseball title appearance in 73 years.
Kaden Kress and Brayden Jenkins each drove home two runs in the win, while Bron Schaefer allowed only 2 runs on the mound while striking out 8 batters.
The other D-1 semifinal featuring Madison Memorial and Muskego was rained out.
It was rescheduled for noon today at Appleton North High School, with the winner advancing to the title game against Kaukauna at 6:05 p.m.
The Division 4 championship is slated to kick off the day, as Potosi/Cassville faces Columbus Catholic.
While the D1 semifinal is being played, Cedar Grove-Belgium will be facing Dodgeville on Neuroscience Group Field for the Division 3 title.
That game will be followed by the Division 2 championship, featuring Kenosha St. Joseph Catholic and Pewaukee.
