
Day two of the WIAA State Softball Tournament saw yet another upset.
In the Division 4 semifinals, 4th-seeded Johnson Creek, on the back of a phenomenal day on the mound from Tori Buglass, shut out top-seeded Grantsburg 9-0.
Buglass allowed only 3 hits while fanning 14 batters, while her teammates peppered the field with 11 hits in the win.
The other D-4 game saw #2 Mineral Point edge out Marathon 2-0.
It was a tie ball game entering the 5th inning, which is when Austy Kinch and Jadyn Schultz each drove in a run to advance to the state final.
The Division 1 quarterfinals wrapped up with #4 Sun Prairie East knocking off #5 Union Grove 2-1.
The Broncos took a 1-0 lead before the Cardinals even got a chance to bat, but Abby Packard and Miley Gross would respond in the 3rd and 4th innings, and Allison Giese struck out 10 batters to secure the win. In Division 5, it was a pair of high-scoring matchups.
#1 Belmont beat #4 Athens 10-2, thanks to an 18-hit performance at the plate.
The Braves’ Carsyn Ramaker earned 15 strikeouts in the win, while Lexi Riechers notched 4 hits. Lastly, #2 Almond-Bancroft beat #3 Blair-Taylor 11-6
The Eagles scored early and often, and held off a late comeback attempt to advance.
Semifinal action wraps up today, with Division 1 action split between two sites.
#6 Appleton North will try to upset #2 Muskego at Madison College, while #1 Hamilton takes on #4 Sun Prairie East on Goodman Diamond.
Then, the Division 3 semifinals begin with #1 Lomira taking on #4 Spooner, followed by #2 New Holstein battling #3 Lodi.
In Division 2, #1 Medford is set to battle #4 Pewaukee, while a matchup between #2 Turner and #3 Fox Valley Lutheran will conclude the day’s action.
Champions will be crowned in all five divisions tomorrow.
