For National Donut Day on Friday, Micheal Pierson, the development director for the Manitowoc Salvation Army, volunteered his time to hand out donuts to local first responders.
National Donut Day is a tradition that started in World War 1 with 250 Salvation Army volunteers, also known as the “donut lassies”, going to the front lines to make donuts for our soldiers to ensure they were being cared for.
The Salvation Army continues this tradition today by handing out donuts to local first responders, including their first stop at the Manitowoc police and fire departments.
“So we’ll be going to other fire stations in Manitowoc and then the police and fire station in Two Rivers as well,” they said.
This tradition is kept alive by the Salvation Army, and they take pride in the work they are doing.
He said, “It’s really honoring to me that I get to continue a tradition that has meant so much to our national history.”
The assistant chief of operations, Craig Jansen, accepted the donuts on behalf of the Manitowoc police department.
“We appreciate the Salvation Army, and I don’t think police officers would ever deny a gift of free donuts,” said Jansen.
