The City of Manitowoc is giving residents reminders about their lawns.
All grass clippings and other yard waste need to be kept out of the city streets and alleys.
The city asks people mowing their lawn to direct the blower away from the street and clean up any grass clippings.
Proper disposal of yard debris helps reduce stormwater pollution because when it enters storm sewer inlets, it becomes wet and quickly decomposes, adding unnecessary nutrients to the city’s stormwater system.
Public Works Director Dan Koski says grass clippings degrade city water quality and also cost tax dollars. Leaves, sediment, and other debris can plug up storm pipes and cause flooding.
Koski is also asking residents to be responsible in their use of fertilizers and herbicides in their yards.
The city receives complaints about fertilizer on sidewalks and in the street, some of which contain herbicides.
The city recommends mulching your lawn to keep it healthy so it can out-compete weeds for light, nutrients, and water.
If you use fertilizer, sweep up any excess, as it can end up in Lake Michigan.
If you use herbicide, follow the directions on the label and post notices so others are aware and can avoid the area.
