The City of Manitowoc’s newest alderman decided to step up after serving on city committees previously.
5th District Alderman Mason Benzinger spoke to Seehafernews.com, saying he wanted to take his experience as a citizen and move into a bigger role.
On Election night, he wasn’t sure whether he would win or lose.
He noted, “And then when the results did come in, it felt right.”
Benzinger served on Manitowoc’s Police and Fire Commission, but is now representing his constituents, beating incumbent William DeBaetes by 133 votes.
He says his constituents are concerned about the issues everyone in the Clipper City talks about.
“Property taxes, roads,” he explained. “And I’ve gotten a few contacts about neighborhood issues already.”
Since the election, Benzinger says it’s been very good being an alderman so far.
He’s also enjoyed his time on new city committees run by the common council.
“I sort of enjoy digging into these things in my spare time,” he recalled. “And looking for ways to incorporate council business into my daily routine, as it already was. So, for example, going out for a walk with my wife in the evening hours can sometimes be coupled up with reviewing a neighborhood concern.”
Benzinger says he wants to be available to his constituents when they need him.
