A local state assemblyman is explaining why he supported returning the surplus to residents.
State Representative Paul Tittl of Manitowoc says the proposal to send $1.8 billion in surplus is “progress for providing relief to Wisconsin taxpayers and lifting up school districts.”
Rep. Tittl highlighted provisions in the bipartisan effort, including $300 and $500 tax rebates for single and married couples, respectively.
Over $300 million would go toward property tax relief to school districts, and $50 million would be used by technical colleges.
He estimated that the Manitowoc Public School District would have received an additional $885,000 in special education funding, while Two Rivers Public Schools would’ve received $248,000 in extra funding.
While the bill, known as Special Session Bill 1, passed the Wisconsin Assembly, it failed in the Senate.
Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu blamed Senate Democrats for opposing the bill, but Republican Gubernatorial Candidate Tom Tiffany came out against the deal, saying it didn’t do enough to stop a 400-year veto signed by Governor Tony Evers.
