A five-game winning streak in Big East North Division play has Manitowoc Lutheran back in the thick of the title hunt as the Lancers head to Mishicot to battle the Indians in the backend of a home-and-home series this week.
Manitowoc Lutheran hasn’t lost a Big East North Division contest since April 23rd, when they dropped a 7-4 decision at home to Reedsville.
They ran their conference winning streak to five by defeating the Indians by a score of 12 to 8 Tuesday at Lancer Circle to remain a game behind North Division leading St. Mary Catholic (6-1 in league 12-5 overall).
The Lancers (5-2 in league and 8-6 overall) have been getting the job done by playing their version of “Brewer Ball”.
Translated, they work the count to either draw walks or get a pitch to hit to get on base to take advantage of their speed.
The Lancers have stolen 69 bases in just 14 games, with Logan Haupt leading the way with 16.
Wesley Hecker has stolen 13 bases, and Isiah Hochmuth (HOCK-MUTH) has 12 steals.
Josiah Martin is fourth on the team with 9 thefts. They also don’t beat themselves defensively as they have successfully converted 94.5 percent (294 of 325) of their chances in the field.
Meanwhile, things have gone a bit downhill for Mishicot in the second half of the season.
After winning 5 of 6 during a stretch earlier this season, they’ve dropped five of their last six, including that four-run loss to the Lancers on Tuesday.
A big reason why has been a lack of scoring, as prior to Tuesday, they had scored a total of 8 runs in the previous five games. A victory is paramount if the Indians (3-3 in league 7-9 overall) hope to stay in the Big East North Division hunt.
The first pitch is scheduled to be thrown at 4:30 p.m. Meanwhile, the top two teams in the Big East South battle at Cedar Grove-Belgium as the Rockets host Random Lake.
They met each other at Random Lake on Tuesday with the Rams prevailing by a score of 7-5 to remain undefeated (7-0) in division play and force a virtual tie with the Rockets (8-1) for the South Division lead.
Other baseball games include Roncalli at Two Rivers, Valders hosts undefeated Kiel, Reedsville heads to Hilbert, Big East North Division leading St. Mary Catholic travels to Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah, Kohler/Sheboygan Christian hosts Oostburg, and De Pere heads to Green Bay Preble to battle the Hornets.
