
The Manitowoc Public School District is recognizing Hmong American Day today (May 14th).
Throughout the day, Manitowoc Lincoln High School’s Hmong Dance Team will travel to elementary schools across the district, performing traditional dances and helping younger students see their culture represented and celebrated within their schools.
Hmong America will extend into tomorrow (May 15th) when Lincoln’s Hmong American Club hosts a community cultural event in the evening.
It will feature Hmong dance performances, storytelling, singing, and a culture gallery walk organized by students.
The high school’s club was re-established after students at Washington Middle School wanted to continue creating opportunities to share their culture.
Club Advisor Carl Black says MPSD is beautifully diverse and making sure Hmong students can share their culture, “not only includes every student as a ‘Ship,’ but works to build a community of appreciation and inclusion.”
Lincoln Senior Isabella Vang says sharing stories about her family’s past and what their ancestors did to reach the U.S. is important.
The Hmong People helped the Americans fight during the War in Vietnam.
After the U.S. left the country, Hmong people fled to America seeking refuge away from the communists who took control of the country.
