Sheboygan’s Mayor has voiced his opinion on a proposed fast food restaurant on one of the City’s busiest streets.
Sheboygan’s City Plan Commission met on Tuesday (May 12th) with one item up for discussion being an application for a conditional use permit (CUP) from Permit Solutions to operate a McDonald’s at 1221 Erie Avenue, the site of the recently condemned EBCO Venture Center.
During that meeting, Mayor Ryan Sorenson made a motion to table the discussion, which received unanimous approval from the Plan Commission.
Before the meeting, Mayor Sorenson also posted a video to Facebook, further expressing his opposition to the proposal.
In that video, he states, “This is one of our busiest streets in the city. It’s the most dangerous when it comes to pedestrian and traffic accidents. A drive-through would only exacerbate the traffic issues in this area…We need to be more thoughtful.”
With the CUP getting tabled, it is unclear if and when the matter will be readdressed by the City.
Currently, Sheboygan is already home to four McDonald’s restaurants and, if approved, the proposed Erie Avenue location would be the sixth in an approximately three-mile radius when including the Sheboygan Falls location on State Highway 32.
