Several local organizations are trying to bring back one of the nation’s largest fundraisers to the lakeshore.
The Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive will take place in both Manitowoc and Two Rivers today (May 9th).
Those interested in participating should leave out non-perishable, non-glass items in a bag or box near their mailbox between 9:00 and 9:30 a.m.
Items still need to be visible from the street. Organizations like Grow It Forward in Manitowoc and the Two Rivers Ecumenical Pantry will then get a share of donations once they are all collected and sorted at the Salvation Army of Manitowoc County.
Tracy Bruce-Minehan of Peter’s Pantry said on the WCUB Breakfast Club that they are looking for many non-perishable items, but protein options are very important.
She explained, saying, “Anything canned like canned tuna, chicken is very important, even spam, which is something a lot of us don’t always eat. It’s something more than our parents ate. But it’s still really popular.”
The Stamp Out Food Drive is also a good time to donate cleaning products, like toothpaste, shampoo, sunscreen, and more.
You will see teams with I.D. pins on their cars collecting the food on a mail carrier’s route.
Unfortunately, rural mail carriers will not be collecting items this year.
The last time it happened on the lakeshore was in 2019.
