Damage is estimated at $15,000 from an apartment fire in Two Rivers late yesterday afternoon. Firefighters were called about 4:45 to an apartment complex at 1814 19th Street where it was reported a small fire on the building’s exterior extended through the siding & began to burn into the basement. Captain Chris Klein explained the blaze started in a metal coffee can used as a cigarette butt container and then spread to the siding before burning through to the floor joists in the basement. The flames were contained & extinguished by Two Rivers fire crews. The occupants, Melissa Laurin and her adult son weren’t home at the time and 6 pets including 4 cats, a bird and one guinea pig were rescued. Damage was confined to that single unit and the local chapter of the Red Cross is helping the Laurin’s with living arrangements. Other occupants of the building WERE able to remain in their apartments.
