A Manitowoc Public School District committee wants to move forward on the City of Manitowoc’s deal to purchase Madison Elementary School.
The district’s Finance and Facilities Committee approved sending the $1.00 offer back to the full board for approval.
This comes after the district held a community input session to address residents’ questions about why it’s in their best interest to move forward with the deal.
Superintendent Lee Thennes explained some of the big questions, including why the district selling the property itself could result in a loss if demolition is involved, and how the City of Manitowoc’s deal would remove long-term reliability and eliminate ongoing maintenance and insurance costs.
MPSD also noted that they have not received an offer for the property from any developer other than Manitowoc’s.
Manitowoc Mayor Justin Nickels has also previously told SeehaferNews.com that the city would have a say in what goes on the property, rather than a private developer deciding.
The Manitowoc Public School Board meets next Tuesday (May 12th) and could approve the offer to Madison Elementary.
It would then go back to the City of Manitowoc, where they would fully approve their bid to the school district.
