The whiplash at the gas pump continued this past week.
Just five months ago, we were reporting on area gas prices being at five-year lows, and now, in the first full week of May, gas prices are approaching the record highs we saw in June of 2022.
Over the past week, Manitowoc County motorists watched as the average price per gallon of regular unleaded fuel skyrocketed up 44 cents, according to the AAA Gas Prices website.
The average is currently at $4.46, which is still 40 cents lower than the record high, but it’s also the highest we have seen since.
Sheboygan County reported a 35-cent leap to $4.37 per gallon, while Calumet County is up 48 cents to $4.47.
Outagamie County reported a 41-cent jump to $4.35, Kewaunee County is up the most this week, with a 49-cent bump to $4.48, and Door County’s average is up 46 cents to $4.46.
The state average is also up 44 cents to $4.40, while the national average rose 30 cents to $4.53 per gallon.
