Upgrades to Manitowoc Public Utilities’ Wastewater Treatment Facility are continuing.
Work began last month on continued upgrades to the West Stack Filter and Final Clarifier #2 and #3 rebuilds.
MPU’s East Stack Filter will then be taken offline for rehabilitation.
The stack filters provide the city’s wastewater treatment with eleven layers of synthetic media, 20 feet deep, allowing aerobic bacteria to grow for the water treatment process.
MPU calls finishing the rehab crucial to produce permit-compliant effluent, or treated water.
Also, by June, the rehabilitation of Clarifiers #1 and #4 will be completed.
Customers will see an increase in their wastewater treatment rate, which MPU says is necessary to cover expenses and the required treatment plant upgrades currently underway.
