The Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about scammers posing as the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
Fraudulent IRS letters that look real have been sent out and claim that a person’s tax refund could not be directly deposited.
The sheriff’s department noted that the letters have IRS logs, notice numbers, and language about “updating your bank account information.”
The letters might also ask a person to scan a QR code, visit a fake website, or provide new banking details.
The letters are not from the IRS and are meant to steal a resident’s personal and financial information.
Deputies ask that residents not scan QR codes, visit websites, or provide any banking information in response to unsolicited mail, calls, or emails.
Anyone who needs to check their taxes can log in directly at IRS.gov to check their refund status.
Also, as a reminder, the IRS will not contact anyone through social media or email.
More details about the scam and what to do to check your tax refunds can be found on the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Department’s Facebook page.
