The Lakeland University Muskies are national champions.
The university’s Esports team was recently crowned the ECAC Call of Duty Division D National Champions after defeating Gallaudet University 4-0 in the finals earlier this month.
The Muskies’ Call of Duty team finished the regular season with a 5-2 record and entered the playoffs as a fifth seed.
Playoffs opened with Lakeland facing off against Army West Point Black, a week-one rematch that Lakeland lost.
Led by senior captain Alex Burbach, Lakeland swept West Point 3-0 and advanced to take on the other team to beat them in the regular season, West Virginia Wesleyan.
However, the Muskies were able to avenge that loss as well, winning 3-0 in the semifinals, en route to the national championship victory against Gallaudet University.
The undefeated run through the Call of Duty playoffs earned Lakeland Esports its third national championship as a program.
Regarding the championship victory, Burbach said, “This semester we faced a lot of adversity, but we never quit on each other. No matter what was going on, we kept showing up, kept working, and trusted the process and culture we were making here. The resilience of every member of our team is what made this championship meaningful.”
