Some members of the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office are now wearing body cameras.
Sheriff Dan Hartwig explained on WOMT’s Be My Guest program last week that full-time staff on the operational and support side are wearing the cameras.
The county board approved keeping a contract with Axon, a prominent law enforcement surveillance company, to get the body cameras for sheriff’s deputies to wear on their uniforms.
Hartwig says the next step is for deputies to start training on the new Tasers purchased and on the new camera equipment being installed in 13 squad cars.
The whole project is expected to be up and running by June of this year.
The body camera proposal was initially vetoed from the county’s 2026 budget, but it was overruled by a two-thirds majority of the county board of supervisors.
