
The City of Manitowoc is suing the corporate successor to the Mirro Company for the environmental cleanup and redevelopment costs of the property on Washington Street.
Manitowoc Mayor Justin Nickels announced that the City is seeking a reimbursement of $6 million from Newell Brands.
During the cleanup process, environmental contaminants including PCBs, solvents, petroleum compounds, and PFAS were identified in the soil, requiring the City of make “substantial investments” to restore the property for future use.
Mayor Nickels explained, “These remediation and redevelopment efforts represent a major public investment in bringing new life to one of our community’s most historically significant and long challenged sites. Our goal is simple: ensure accountability for environmental impacts while continuing to move forward with a project that will benefit Manitowoc residents for generations.”
He also noted that the City plans to “move ahead with redevelopment in coordination with state and federal partners, reflecting years of planning, environmental review, and community input documented in ongoing project updates.”
