A collegiate esports team from the area has raised thousands of dollars to support children diagnosed with cancer.
Lakeland University’s Esports team recently teamed up with the Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation for the duo’s third annual Unlocking a Cure fundraising event to raise money for childhood cancer research.
Despite setting the goal of raising $1,500, the Muskies Esports squad surpassed that number, raising $2,085.
The Unlocking a Cure event is highlighted by a 24-hour livestream, which showcased several of the games the team plays, group games, and various challenges.
This included spinning a ”punishment wheel” for every $50 raised, featuring various activities such as eating the wildly spicy Legend Larry’s DOA wings, dramatic storytelling, and more.
Also joining in on the fun and fundraising were students from Two Rivers High School and members of Lakeland’s Mu Lambda Sigma fraternity.
On what this yearly tradition means, Muskies Esports Coach Brett Sheldon said, “Our team really looks forward to this event every year. It’s really an honor for us to partner with Alex’s Lemonade Stand and support their vision. In the last three years, we have raised more money each year, and we hope to continue that trend next year.”
Additionally, a separate goal of $2,000 raised was set by the team, which was reached, meaning Coach Sheldon will now participate in a dunk tank on campus at a later date.
