There seems to be some good news about a possible fish kill in Manitowoc’s Silver Lake.
Wisconsin DNR Fisheries Biologist Jason Breeggemann tells SeehaferNews.com that three fyke nets were set last Tuesday (March 24th) and were lifted after three days.
Two of the nets were set in the eastern basin of the lake, and one in the western basin of the lake for coverage around the entire lake.
186 northern pike were handled through the survey, with 41 being recaptured on the second and third day of the survey, meaning 145 unique individual northern pike were handled during the survey.
The study also found yellow perch, crappies, and one adult bluegill. Breeggeman says the panfish populations may have experienced mortality from the fish kill, but there are still adults that will start spawning this spring, helping the populations rebound in the next couple of years.
The DNR will follow up in the spring with an electrofishing survey to target bass and panfish as water temperatures warm.
Concern around Silver Lake came in January after fishers reported seeing dead fish in the lake.
Another fisher reported that the bait he used died after being put in the water.
