Ground has been broken for a major upgrade to Red Arrow Park.
Manitowoc representatives and T-Mobile members were on hand yesterday to thank those who made the $1 million project possible.
Mayor Justin Nickels said he’s very excited to get the project started on what could be Manitowoc’s busiest beach.
He also thanked the council for their support of the Red Arrow Park project.
“I think that’s just a testament really to the city as a whole,” he said. “We support our quality of life, we support our public parks, we support our families. We support wanting to entice people to come to move to our area because of all of our amenities like this. So it’s been great to see unanimous support of the elected officials for all of this.”
T-Mobile also gave the city a $50,000 grant to help with the project.
A spokesperson talked about their impact on projects in Wisconsin.
“Manitowoc is now the 15th city is Wisconsin to receive a grant from T-Mobile,” she noted. “That’s bringing the Wisconsin count to about $640,000. And, it’s exciting for me to see some of our local employees, how they use this park, the stories, the personal connections they have to it.”
Visit Manitowoc Executive Director Courtney Hansen says the impact of the renovation will benefit events held at Red Arrow Beach, including the annual Sand Sculpting Festival, as well as a watercraft show coming in August.
“There’s so many different uses that folks will now have at this beach that they didn’t necessarily have before,” she explained. “And we’re so lucky to have the support of our mayor and council. Staff have worked so hard. Kudos to Parks for getting this done.”
The project will include new ramps for ADA accessibility as well as a new pavilion area for performances and events.
The parking lot area near the beach will also be repaved.
Mayor Nickels also said that the city plans to have a ribbon-cutting in July for the project.
