Manitowoc’s Fire Chief is talking about an assessment study being done in the city’s fire department.
Chief Todd Blazer explained on WOMT’s Be My Guest program that the study is looking at their facilities and the deployment of fire trucks and ambulances to different locations.
“It’s been a while since something like that’s been done,” he explained. “And with the work with Ben and myself, it’s time to really do that to take a look at where the community is going and what’s happening.”
Blazer says there’s been some discussion about the city’s need for a new fire station or improving facilities, but SCH, the group doing the assessment study, needs to do its work.
Right now, it’s not known for certain what the department’s future will look like, but they are looking to make things more efficient.
The fire chief credited the county’s joint dispatch and the city’s community development department for looking at what kind of calls come in and where they are coming from in the city.
Mayor Justin Nickels stated in his 2026 budget presentation that the city is exploring whether it could operate with just three fire stations instead of four.
They are also looking to consolidate the city’s Public Safety Building and make it the full-time police station.
