The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is reminding anglers of a change in the start of one of the state’s most popular fishing seasons.
Statewide, the 2026 inland trout fishing season will now begin on April 4th, one month earlier than usual.
With this change to the inland trout season, the DNR noted, “Trout populations are strong across most Wisconsin waters and this additional month of harvest will provide anglers more fishing opportunities during a time of the year when other fishing seasons are generally closed.”
This move was also strongly supported by the general public at the DNR and Wisconsin Conservation Congress 2025 Spring Hearings.
This early opening date, however, only applies to inland streams, springs, and spring ponds, and the traditional May 2nd opening date remains in place for all inland lakes and ponds.
Additionally, anyone looking to participate in the inland trout season is required to have a 2026-2027 general fishing license and an inland trout stamp.
As is the case for any fishing season, the DNR urges anglers to adhere to daily bag and length limits, which can be found online by visiting dnr.wisconsin.gov.
