A senior at Sheboygan South has been recognized for his resilience in a battle with cancer.
South Redwing Ryan Stephen has been named as one of seven recipients of the 2026 Milwaukee Bucks Perseverance Award.
Ryan, a member of the South basketball team, was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer back in August of 2024.
The next nine months were filled with nights in the hospital, numerous rounds of chemotherapy, and multiple surgeries.
However, on May 22nd of last year, Ryan’s undeniable resilience and perseverance allowed him to officially ring the bell at Children’s Wisconsin Hospital in Milwaukee, after he was declared cancer-free.
His journey did not end there, though, as hundreds of hours of physical therapy would follow, leading him to his ultimate goal, suiting up and hitting the court alongside his teammates.
That hard work would come to a head on November 28th of last year, South’s first game of the season.
Ryan not only suited up, but also played in the game and would finish with five points, including a three-pointer.
He would continue to shine for the Redwings throughout the season, shooting 46% from the field and a blistering 43% from behind the arc.
The Milwaukee Bucks Perseverance Awards are handed out each year to student athletes across Wisconsin who have overcome tremendous adversity, much like Ryan.
